Camp Day Tips for Thursday, 8/21

Hello RAs,

We wanted to let you know that we would be going to camp for the day on Thursday, August 21.  We are going to Hopkinton State Park (if you were an RA last year, it is where we went last year).  Some things to plan for:

  • We encourage sneakers for some of the activities we will be doing.  If you want to, bring flip flops as well; that is fine.
  • Wear active/loose clothing.  It is similar to a field day.
  • If you have any issues participating, please see Shelly so she can work with you.
  • You should bring any of the following you may need/want: epipen, sunblock, sunglasses, or hat.
  • You can bring a reusable water bottle; there is a fountain there you can fill with.  There will also be bottled water provided.
  • There is time and a place to swim.  Feel free to bring a bathing suit/towel/change of clothes if you might want to swim.
  • Lastly, lunch is provided and some snacks but if you wish to bring some additional snacks for yourself, then feel free to do so.

RA Training Spirit Days

Hello RAs!  We're only five days away from the beginning of RA training!

Today we wanted to share with you that throughout training, we will have "Spirit Days."  It's meant to be a fun and friendly way to promote competition but also to simply provide an opportunity to show spirit as individuals and staff team members!

For each day, consider what you might want to bring from home to wear or how you'd like to decorate:

Wednesday, August 20:
HAT DAY

Wear any kind of hat you'd like!  A zany hat, a favorite hat, a hat on top of a hat... be creative!

Thursday, August 21:
CAMP DAY - Dress as a Team

This is a good one to plan ahead with your RA staff.  Since it's camp day, we'll be outdoors doing lots of team building, so keep your attire casual and appropriate!

Monday, August 25:
TWIN DAY

Dress like your floor partner.  Don't have a floor partner?  Dress like your RD or SRA!

Wednesday, August 27:
BSU SPIRIT DAY

Wear your best BSU gear!  Did you know BSU is in its 175th year as an institution?  We'll have more to share about the exciting stuff that the university plans to do to celebrate in the spring semester of 2015!

Thursday, August 28:
BANQUET - Dress to Impress

The "End of Training" RLH banquet takes place this day at lunch time, and we're taking staff photos!  One large group photo of all of us, and then one for every staff.  So dress to impress!  Be fancy.

RLH Committees: Part II

Here are five more departmental committees that you may be interested in joining this coming academic year!  As previously mentioned, if you have an interest in any of the following committees, we encourage you to contact the respective committee chair.

The Media Committee is responsible for digitally documenting all that RLH does via social media outlets and an end of the year photo/video montage.  It would really be helpful if every RA follow this link https://db.tt/Pw4KqQr and joined Dropbox and share “ANY PICTURES or VIDEO DEPICTING RA LIFE.”  The Media Committee is chaired by Richardson Pierre-Louis.  The committee will meet every other Monday at 3pm in the Weygand Hall East Multipurpose Room, beginning September 22nd.

The Recognition and Motivation Squad, affectionately called RAMS, serves to recognize student staff members and professional staff members who benefit the residents and the department.  This includes coordinating days of appreciation for various staff members, as well as voting on monthly award nominations for student staff.  We're always looking for folks who enjoy recognition!  RAMS is chaired by Mike Goodhart.  The committee will meet every other Monday at 2pm in the Weygand Hall East Multipurpose Room, beginning September 8th.

The RLH Student Staff Recruitment & Selection Committee is responsible for the promotion of, and hiring of the RA & Senior RA, Programming Assistant (PA) and Senior Programming Assistant (SPA), Office Assistant (OA), and Student Security Officer (SSO) & SSO Coordinator positions. Additionally, we are responsible for the hiring of all the summer positions including Summer RA, Summer OA, and Conference Assistants. Student can participate in helping us develop the processes for these, such as the interview questions and group process activities, and through helping with developing the theme and publicity of our positions around campus!  The RLH Student Staff Recruitment & Selection Committee is co-chaired by Shelly Keniston & Jon Bragg.  The committee will meet on Thursdays at 1pm in the East Hall Conference Room.

In the Student Staff Training & In-Service Committee, it is always helpful to have student input. This committee allows RAs to get involved in helping to plan Winter and Spring trainings for RAs, OAs and CAs. We also plan In-Services for the department throughout the year. It is always good to have a student’s perspective and to hear from them about effective ways to teach and share new information, and to find out what how to better address the needs of our students through training and in-service sessions.  The Student Staff Training & In-Service Committee is co-chaired by Shelly Keniston & Max Quinn.  The committee will meet every Thursday at 10am in the Weygand Hall East Multipurpose Room.

The Sustainability Committee-Our mission is to increase awareness of sustainability and to promote the broad use of effective sustainable practices among professional staff and resident students inside and outside of the residence halls. We would love creative minds and passion towards green initiatives.  The Sustainability Committee is chaired by George Marshall Jr.  The committee will meet Mondays at 2pm in the DiNardo Hall lounge, beginning September 8th.
